During the rebuild, immense engineering and custom fabrication went into the entire powertrain to give this Scout the power, reliability, performance, and fuel efficiency to handle any off-road adventure imaginable, while keeping it performing smoothly on a city street. The Scout is a forebearer of the modern SUV and holds a uniquely revered status. The Scout is one of the more interesting vehicles ever manufactured in the United States. International Harvester produced the Scout from 1961 to 1980, creating it as a competitor to the Jeep, manufacturing only 532,674 during its 20-year production run. The Scout is in the pantheon of the most respected 4WD steeds (with the ilk of the Land Rover Defenders, Chevy Blazers, and Ford Broncos). Land Rover restorations are cost-prohibitive for most, and Blazer and Bronco restorations are cliché. The Scout is rarer than all of them, and finding one is becoming difficult.
